The Professional Development of Water Governance and Regional Development Practitioners in the Mekong Basin Program

hosted by Mekong Sub-region Social Research Centre (MSSRC), Faculty of Liberal Arts, Ubon Ratchathani University, Thailand . The project is proceeded and funded under the supervision of CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and Australian Aids which starts from January 2015 to December 2017

This project will strengthen and expand relevant capacities of a Mekong-focused cohort of critical and engaged young scholars and practitioners of water governance and regional development, and link these to researchers in other Greater Mekong region basins, through a multi-country/ multi-basin collaborative fellowships program, teaching/training curriculum on water governance and effective communication. The project will foster collaboration among regional networks and organizations that have common interest and experience on the programs on professional development such as the M-POWER and SUMERNET.

โครงการนี้จะสร้างความเข้มแข็งและขยายศักยภาพที่เกี่ยวข้องของพันธมิตรในลุ่มแม่น้ำโขง ที่มุ่งเน้นความสำคัญ และส่วนร่วมของนักวิชาการรุ่นใหม่ รวมไปถึงผู้ปฏิบัติงานเกี่ยวกับการบริหารจัดการน้ำ และการพัฒนาในระดับภูมิภาค อีกทั้งเชื่อมโยงสิ่งเหล่านี้ไปยังนักวิจัยท่านอื่นภายในภูมิภาคลุ่มน้ำโขง  ภายใต้โครงการความร่วมมือด้านงานวิจัยผ่านหลายประเทศ / หลายลุ่มน้ำ, การเรียนการสอน / หลักสูตรการฝึกอบรม เกี่ยวกับการบริหารจัดการน้ำ และการ สื่อสารอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ท้ายสุด โครงการนี้จะส่งเสริมให้เกิดการร่วมมือระหว่างเครือข่ายในระดับภูมิภาคและองค์กรที่มีความสนใจร่วมกัน และมีประสบการณ์ในโครงการพัฒนาระดับสากล เช่น M -POWER และ SUMERNET

During phase 1 of the project during 2015 and 2016, 38 fellows have undertaken research, joined three workshops about research design, fieldwork and writing, and produced: two blogs; a research report; a conference paper; and a policy brief. They also joined two Greater Mekong Forums on Food Water and Energy in 2015 in Phnom Penh and 2016 in Bangkok. Furthermore, the fellows presented their research at the International Conference on the Mekong, Salween and Red Rivers: Sharing Knowledge and Perspectives Across Borders at the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University in November 2016.

We are now moving to Phase 2 of the fellowship program, in which 8 fellows from each river basin have been selected to contribute either a book chapter or journal paper for publication.

The WriteShop, to be held in on 23-24 March 2017 in Sapa, Vietnam, is intended to support fellows in the production of these materials. The books/ journal papers will be published by the end of 2017… READ MORE

2016 Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food, and Energy

The largest event of its kind in the Mekong Region. It is a major, regional knowledge-sharing event, interfacing knowledge producers with knowledge users.

The 2016 Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food and Energy has announced to be held on November 9th – 11th, 2016 at Prince Palace Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand.  The forum this year will be implemented by CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems, and is co-hosted by:
The Centre for Social Development Studies, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand;
The Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.
And others to be announced.

The purpose of the forum is:

  • Improved water-related discussions between often stakeholders with differing interests.
  • Well-managed and informal discussions on difficult and controversial water-related discussions.
  • Cross-regional learning on nexus-related issues, and networking.
  • Interfacing research-based solutions with a non-technical public, policy-makers and the private sector.
  • Providing would-be users with an opportunity to deliberate and query potential solutions.

Workshop for Research Finding Analysis and Conference Paper Writing

1 – 3 April 2016

The “Capacity Building and Professional Development of Water Governance and Regional Development Practitioners in the Mekong, Salween and Red river basins (MK31, 32 and 33)” project is working to strengthen the capacity for undertaking research and policy engagement of scholars and practitioners of water, land and energy use, management and governance in the Red, Mekong and Salween river basins. A particular cross-cutting focus of the project is research on gender and other forms of social marginalization. It also intends to build a learning community amongst these scholars and practitioners.

Through the16-month mentored fellowships, 12-13 research fellows from each river basin are working to produce timely and needed research. Their work is intended to be shared with government officials, researchers, civil society, community representatives and the private sector relevant to their particular research project. “Mekong – Salween Basins: Development and Challenges”


MK32 organized the panel on “Mekong – Salween Basins: Development and Challenges” along with the Thailand Research Council and the other leading Universities in the northeast of Thailand in the annual forum called Thailand Regional Research Expo 2016. The panel was held on March 4, 2016 at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University.

In this great opportunity, MK32 had received the positive responses from  5 fellows in our project and one respective professor from MK31 to be our honorable panelists.

News: The 2015 Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food, and Energy


“The 2015 Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food and Energy will be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from October 21-23, 2015. The event is co-hosted by the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems, the Ministry of Environment of the Royal Cambodian Government, and the International Water Management Institute.The Forum is the largest event in the Mekong Region to address the confluence of water, food and energy. It brings together regional water, food and energy professionals and thinkers to explore new and emerging ideas in water, its development and its exploitation. In 2013, the event attracted over 270 participants from 95 different institutions. This year, 40 sessions are being planned, and will be hosted, by 35 different regional and international institutions, agencies and initiatives…

Our MK32 project will organize two sessions together with MK31 and MK33 projects which are

  • Session 6: Launching the 2015 Regional WLE Fellowship Program in the Mekong, Salween and Red River basins
    • We will hold a session announcing details of the program to the conference. It will be a great way to network with the conference participants.
  • Session 18: Debating Water Governance in Southeast Asia: The perspective of the 2015 WLE Fellows
    • We will hold a reflection session to ask about lessons learned from participating in the forum.

Workshop on Field study and Data Analysis

The workshop was successfully passed and everything went well. All of resource persons and staffs had worked very hard to make this workshop effective. We do hope very much that the “Workshop on Field study and Data Analysis”  have formed you the new experiences, new attitudes, new friends as well as broadening your knowledge.  Beyond, we expect that the field study in the Rasi Salai communities would be beneficial guideline for your future works.

News: Upcoming Ubon workshop

“Workshop on Field study and Data Analysis”

We, MK32, are going to host the workshop on fieldwork study on 4 – 6 August 2015.
The venue is Dok Jaan 3 room, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU), Tam Moon Association, Rasi Salai District of Si Sa Ket Province, Thailand.

The topics of the field survey are

  1. Roles of women in wetland management
  2. Roles of government and local authority in irrigation management
  3. Civil society and people organization in wetland recovery
  4. Traditional water management
  5. Local Livelihoods and change of wetland resources and utilization
